About us

Who we are

We are a small team who believe that every helping hand can give an animal a chance and create a better future for them.

Our founders, Shane and Christina Carney, have been involved in animal rescue in various ways for over a decade. From adopting dogs to taking in surprise rats and mice from local school teachers, for years there was an unofficial rescue going on in their home. Over time, they got more directly involved in the animal rescue world by fostering for various organizations throughout Northern California. In total, they’ve adopted 26 animals and fostered 11 more.

As their knowledge of the animal rescue and welfare system grew, they saw a need for the animals who slip through the cracks of an overwhelmed system. Wild Poppies Animal Rescue has always been an unofficial concept, but it became reality when incorporated in 2025.

Our approach

Our Mission
At Wild Poppies Animal Rescue, we nurture the resilience of animals in need, offering sanctuary to the elderly, injured, and forgotten. We provide a safe haven for healing, use fostering to create new beginnings, and support pet guardians with essential resources. Through compassion, care, and community, we ensure that every animal—no matter their journey—can thrive with dignity and love.
Our Vision
To create a world where every animal, like the wild poppy, can bloom in the face of adversity, surrounded by compassion and care. Wild Poppies Animal Rescue envisions a community where all animals are cherished, their unique needs respected, and their lives filled with love and opportunity, no matter their past.
